MANDEM: Mythpunk Art Noir at Fermentation Lounge (Tallahassee, FL)

See the work of “Mythpunk Art Noir” artist MANDEM (http://www.MythpunkArt.com) at Fermentation Lounge in the All Saints art district in Tallahassee, FL. Join us for the opening on Friday, August 31, or stop by Fermenation Lounge throughout the month of September to see the artwork.

About the Artist:

…My work is a transdigital exploration of metamorphoses, multivalency, and anachronism. I aim to capture ambiguous moments of transcendence, hinting at a mythos that viewers must (re)create for themselves. My work originates with digital art techniques, but incorporates traditional mediums in a dynamic workflow that dances between computer and canvas, layering physical media over digital grounds or converting paints into digital textures. The result is work that transcends genre both in content and in technique.

My interest in destabilizing genre — both in terms of content and medium — draws heavily from my personal identity as a queer feminist. I’m interested in subtle ways to defy comfortable expectations by, for example, creating a canvas that cannot be easily identified as either a print or a painting. My subject matter is also liminal, featuring characters of uncertain biological identity, blurring the lines between genders and between humans, animals, and machines.

About Fermentation Lounge:

…Set in the heart of the All Saints Arts District, the Fermentation Lounge features over 100 craft beers and artisan wines in an intimate, mid-century setting. The weekly changing Fermentation menus are complemented by a staff happy to help you sort through and learn about beers from Altbier to Witbier and wines from Baco Noir to Zinfandel.

We do not have TVs, loud music or giant glowing beer signs, but do have a large screen projection system that features a weekly rotation of vintage ads, film clips and nostalgia from the late 1940’s to mid 1960’s (Mid century era) and music randomly selected by our staff on a daily basis to match the mood of the night.

We just entered the “Dark Shadows: The Barnabas Portrait Project” contest. The winner will be selected by Tim Burton (from among the 10 semi-finalists chosen by other judges). We’ve never done celebrity portraits or fan art of this kind before, but we couldn’t pass up the very slim chance that Tim Burton would find out who MANDEM is. This is, incidentally, MANDEM’s first full acrylic painting (as necessitated by the 48-hour deadline and the slow drying time of oils). The style is actually based on a Mischtechnik approach to painting, which ideally would have been done with egg tempera and oils. This method paints a single color layer at a time, and adds layers of white in-between to create a deep three-dimensional feel. Final color rendering is done after 6 preliminary layers. Go visit our entry on DeviantArt and be sure to add comments, share it with your friends, and Favorite it. Most people view the contest by “most popular” so you’ll bump us closer to the front by bringing activity to the page. :-)
