In-progress photos: “The Trials of St. Sebastian: Hyacinth.”

The “Trials of St. Sebastian” series continues our use of religious memes from classical art history that are re-imagined as discourse on the diseases of postmodern society. In this series, we draw from the early antiquity history of syncretizing Saint Sebastian with Apollo. (It was this syncretization that granted St. Sebastian domain over plagues and contributed to his status as a romantic icon and object of male desire.)

In traditional art historical paintings, Sebastian was attended by St. Irene, the woman who healed him after his first brush with martyrdom, and often a pair of cherubic angels. In classical vase painting, heroes are often attended in their travails by Artemis or Athena (Apollo’s sister and half-sister, respectively)… In our series, St. Irene is replaced by the two children.

MANDEM WINS SECOND PLACE AT PINNACLE NATIONAL JURIED ART COMPETITION

Her Brother’s Keeper: Rupture, a mixed media piece by MANDEM won Second Place at the Sixth Annual PINNACLE National Juried Art Competition at Florida A&M University’s Foster-Tanner Art Gallery.

Dr. Marilyn Proctor-Givins, the juror for PINNACLE 2014, shared the following thoughts about the selection process for this exhibit:
"What an amazing honor and difficult task I had in selecting works of art for the Pinnacle exhibition at the Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery this year…. I was captivated by the artistic voices expressed in the works submitted for review. The body of work exhibits a broad spectrum of engaging subject matter skillfully arranged around a creative media palette that allows one’s eyes to repeatedly gaze and ponder the artist’s intent in their masterful balance of subject and technical style."
Her Brother’s Keeper: Rupture is one of three mixed media works by MANDEM that were accepted to PINNACLE.

MANDEM Awarded MoFA Professional Development Award

MANDEM was awarded the FSU Museum of Fine Arts’ Artists’ League’s Professional Development Award for 2014.
