MANDEM WINS SECOND PLACE AT PINNACLE NATIONAL JURIED ART COMPETITION

Her Brother’s Keeper: Rupture, a mixed media piece by MANDEM won Second Place at the Sixth Annual PINNACLE National Juried Art Competition at Florida A&M University’s Foster-Tanner Art Gallery.

Dr. Marilyn Proctor-Givins, the juror for PINNACLE 2014, shared the following thoughts about the selection process for this exhibit:
"What an amazing honor and difficult task I had in selecting works of art for the Pinnacle exhibition at the Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery this year…. I was captivated by the artistic voices expressed in the works submitted for review. The body of work exhibits a broad spectrum of engaging subject matter skillfully arranged around a creative media palette that allows one’s eyes to repeatedly gaze and ponder the artist’s intent in their masterful balance of subject and technical style."
Her Brother’s Keeper: Rupture is one of three mixed media works by MANDEM that were accepted to PINNACLE.

MANDEM Awarded MoFA Professional Development Award

MANDEM was awarded the FSU Museum of Fine Arts’ Artists’ League’s Professional Development Award for 2014.

MANDEM Wins First Place at Museum of Fine Arts Exhibit

Tallahassee artist MANDEM won the first place award for the painting Medusa, Her Word Against His at the Artists’ League Summer Annual exhibition at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts. MANDEM is the art name for Maize Arendsee, a Florida State University graduate student and instructor in the Art Department, and Moco Steinman-Arendsee, who work collaboratively. MANDEM has been widely exhibited locally and nationally, as well as having art featured in over 100 publications.

Another painting in MANDEM’s Medusa series (Medusa, In Her Sunday Best) recently won a Juror’s Merit award at the LaGrange National XXVIII Biennial exhibition in Georgia.

The 2014 Summer Annual exhibit was juried by Amanda Karioth Thompson, the Acting Director of the Council on Culture and Arts for Tallahassee/Leon County (COCA). Thompson had this to say about Medusa, Her Word Against His and why it was selected for the first place award:

"Aside from the fact that it is technically marvelous, this painting is challenging and imbued with dualities. I see a woman who is at once extremely vulnerable and invincible. Her posture is self-protective and though she’s clearly been through trauma, she survives. Confronting viewers with her cuts and bruises, she asks us to consider our own hard fought battles. She is a survivor, not a victim. There’s no doubt that this experience will be transformative and it seems she’s contemplating exactly how that transformation will manifest itself. This piece resonated with me. I try hard to remember that we’re all fighting some type of battle. You can either be destroyed or empowered by your struggles, it’s your choice."

MANDEM’s mixed media piece “Equivalent Exchange” was also selected to be part of the exhibit.

The Artists’ League of the FSU Museum of Fine Arts was formed approximately two decades ago and is responsible for numerous exhibitions and events throughout the year, including the Summer Annual and the Arts and Antiques Fair at the Museum, as well as exhibits at LeMoyne Center for Visual Arts. Thompson, who regularly curates exhibits for COCA’s Art in Public Places exhibits, was enthusiastic about working with the Artists’ League for this show. “This exhibition is perfect example of the diversity that’s prevalent in this group. With artists working in a wide variety of mediums, styles and subject matter, this exhibit has something for everyone,” said Thompson.

The Summer Annual runs from May 16 through July 11, 2014. The FSU Museum of Fine Arts is open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm, and is located at 530 W. Call Street in Tallahassee, FL. Visit http://mofa.cvatd.fsu.edu for driving directions and other visitor information.

"Congratulations, You have been accepted to participate in the 2014 SECAC Exhibition in Sarasota, FL…."

We are thrilled that Her Brother’s Keeper: Domestication has been selected for this show! (Only 27 artists made the cut.) In addition to showing work in the juried exhibition, we will also be presenting Medusa, from Ovid to Cixous to ‘Once Upon A Time’ as part of the Wicked Women in Art session at the SECAC conference.
